Göteborg is receiving the establishment of an international center for sustainable urban development

Göteborg is receiving the establishment of an international center for sustainable urban development. With tough concurrence from Stockholm and Malmö, third city of Sweden, Göteborg won this battle. Mistra - The Foundation for Environmental Strategic Research — announced this. Mistra ascertained that Göteborg is one step ahead in this field compared to Stockholm and Malmö. The work with establishing one of the world´s leading knowledge centers for ecological, economical and social sustainable cities has now began.More than half of the world´s population lives in cities. The new center will focus on the growing cities´ challenges and is unique in its kind — the thought is not only to work cross-disciplinary but also to unify theory and practice.
This center will have great significance for the city of Göteborg.
- It means that Göteborg will receive a lot of attention, also globally. It is about creating knowledge around the term sustainable cities in general, however, Göteborg will also work as an experimenting facility. My impressions is that Mistra realized that we have good conditions for serious cooperation across all borders. ", says Henriette Söderberg at Göteborg City Management Office.
Mistra are responsible for this investment. About two years ago, Swedish Universities could report their interest in establishing a international knowledge center for sustainable urban development.
Chalmers and University of Gothenburg applied together with the City of Göteborg, The Local Government Federation of Göteborg Region, Region of Västra Götaland (Western Sweden), The County Administrative Board, and the Swedish Environmental Institute IVL.
