Business Region Göteborg, BRG, together with partners, exhibited at the MIPIM Real Estate and Investment Fair in Cannes, France. The program this week included different happenings and events. The main event with the theme “Airport Cities" took place on Wednesday in the stand of BRG. This happening was arranged by the Göteborg-Oslo Region, GO.
Various speakers talked about the meaning of an airport city and its importance and driving force for the regional economic growth. Speaker and moderator was Jan Jörnmark who holds a PhD in Economic History at the University of Gothenburg. Olle Sundin, Airport Director at Göteborg Landvetter Airport, presented the visions and strategies for the airport. Here are some words from Olle Sundin´s presentation:
• An airport is extremely important to a region. Göteborg Landvetter Airport is important in strengthening the long-term competitiveness of western Sweden.• Göteborg Landvetter Airport is a growth engine for its region. Offering efficient transport services is essential in order to remain competitive.• Our region has a highly international business community and a lot of research activities. An international airport is therefore vital for increasing the global competitiveness. • We are preparing to meet the needs of our current and future partners for commercial space and land. Our close collaboration with regional bodies has shown that the area around the airport has major potential and drawing power. • Göteborg Landvetter Airport is an attractive marketplace.• A flow of more than 5 million people per year.• About 4.3 million passengers per year. Capacity for at least 6 million passengers.• 75 per cent of passengers take international flights.• Major commercial potential beyond aircraft take-offs and landings.• The future Göteborg Landvetter Airport will be a travel centre, business centre and shopping centre.• All modes of transport combined ? aircraft, buses, trains and cars. The Port of Göteborg (Gothenburg) is less than 20 minutes away by car.• A lot of undeveloped land around the airport ? potential building volume of 700,000 square metres .• Undeveloped land areas around the airport today are a full 300,000 m2 of land, which could accommodate at least 700,000 m2 of floor space. • What is unique in our case is that we will be building this Airport City from the ground up and are not limited to neighbors.• From zero to what we want, the local plans are developed. The land is ready-to-go. • A long list of companies could benefit from being located near the airport: • Head offices and regional offices of international companies. • Logistics companies? Today there is a shortage of suitable land for logistics facilities in the Göteborg area. • Companies in the travel industry.• Hotels, a conference and trade show centre, showrooms, shopping. • Service industries ? more than 5 million people a year already visit the airport. • The airport creates accessibility ? both for business and people.• 1-2 hours to major cities in Europe. Less than two hours to most major European metropolitan areas.• From a logistics standpoint, Göteborg Landvetter Airport is an important cargo airport and the region has been singled out as one of the foremost logistics locations in Sweden.• Seventy per cent of the industry in Scandinavia is located within a radius of 500 km from Göteborg.• Göteborg Landvetter Airport is an ideal hub between the three Scandinavian capitals:Stockholm Oslo and Copenhagen.Göteborg Landvetter Airport is now looking for partners. Except for this main stand event, two coffee bar meetings took place, one on Tuesday and one on Thursday. The focus here was on sustainable projects. White Architects held their presentation about sustainable architecture. The project Kuggen “The Cog" was presented by the architecture of the Cog, an exciting sustainable project, named Gert Wingårdh. The seminars attracted over 70 visitors to the stand and the local politicians of Göteborg Region were present as well.
